Department store and block of flats of Johann (Hans) Stocker
Accessible to the public only during operating hours of the businesses residing here.
The cabinet-maker’s son Johann (Hans) Stocker from the village of Okrouhlá started out as a regular tailor. He was first trying to make his living in different places of the Cheb region, and he decided to settle down in Cheb when he was 28. He established a tailor’s shop and men’s and women’s clothing shop which he kept extending and improving by his diligence. Before he decided to carry out his life’s dream – i.e. to build his own fashions house, he ran one of his shops in Svobody Street No. 8; it ceased to meet his business plans soon, though. In 1912 he decided to build a department store and block of flats on the corner of Svobody and Evropská streets. One year later the building constructed by the plans of architect Reinhold Weiss of Mainz brought a flash of the modern and great world to the small-town ambience.[1] The massive corner building acknowledged the Classicist stream of the contemporary architecture with its architectural expression. The rhythm of the facade was dictated by the polygonal oriels ended by balconies with filigree metal banister. The corner oriel was crowned by a dome which is missing today but it can still be seen in the photos from the 1950s. The ground and first floor were divided by high shop windows. Shops accessible only from the street were located on the ground floor of the Fashions House. More shops were placed on the first floor by the architect, along with a room for trying on clothing, storage spaces and offices; there were workshops and rooms in the other part of the building. The second floor with a doctor’s office was habitable. There were only apartments on the third floor. The Pilsen company “Obuv” established a self-service shop with shoes and leather goods there in 1964. The house was included in the list of real estate cultural heritage of the Czech Republic in 2009 for its undisputable architectural quality.
