Barbara (or Babette) Peter, the wife of a well-to-do wholesale trader Ludwig Peter, initiated the construction of a three-floor block of flats in today’s Svobody Street in 1878. The “Deutsches Haus” (German House), as Peter called it herself, was inspected in the next year. Even though the plans have not been preserved we can assume that the project was developed by Carl Haberzettl by the characteristic “handwriting”. The builder drafted a pompous Neo-Renaissance front completed with volute gables in the axes of the two-floor oriels. Only one of them with a coat-of-arms with the initial E, probably referring to the owner’s son and the later owner of the building, Ernst Peter, has been preserved until today. Shops selling mostly haberdashery or short goods were located on the ground floor. Dr. Anton and Marie Kraus obtained the house in 1911 and it was owned by the family until 1941 when it was purchased by the German Trade and Business Bank, LLC. In 1949 it became an asset of the town of Cheb.
