Johann John’s House
Accessible to the public only during operating hours of the businesses residing here.
Johann John, originally from Horní Lomany by Františkovy Lázně (Franzensbad), turned to builder Carl Haberzettl from Cheb in1876 to design a three floor building in Svobody Street where he purchased a construction site a short time before. Haberzettl presented him with a project where the major mass of the building was delineated by two side avant-corps accentuated by rustication. He situated a total of five shops to the ground floor with round-vaulted entrances and display windows. The house was purchased by delicatessen, south fruits and mineral water merchant Josef Stadler in 1919, who created a wine bar, a breakfast bar and a deli shop here. In 1934 and 1936 the shops received simple and modern display windows. After World War II, in 1946, the house was transferred into national administration and later into the town of Cheb ownership. In 1961–1962 there was the centre of the self-service restaurants of the company “Pramen Cheb”. Interior and exterior modifications of the shop took place in 1980. A deli shop selling also specialties and refreshments was located on the ground floor besides a popular café (called “u Čápa”) as well.
