Two associates, Michael Beck and Ignaz Glaser, decided to build a hotel called Kronprinz Rudolf in Svobody Street in 1872. The development of the plans was entrusted to the very young builder ing. Carl Haberzettl who took over the construction firm from his father Adam Haberzettl. He designed a spreading two floor building with a central avant-corps ended by an attic floor with a balustrade. He located an entrance to the axis of the building facilitating access to the industrial buildings. A restaurant with a kitchen and shops were located on the ground floor, with individual rooms on the floors. In 1873 the builder proposed a garden pavilion with two halls, orchestra, bar, buffet, reading room and billiards room on the site behind the hotel. Already one year after the construction of the hotel Ignaz Glaser becomes the sole owner of the building and plots. The Glaser family owned the hotel until 1893 when it was purchased by Hugo and Bertha Sauer. Two years later, after the death of his wife, Sauer sold the hotel to Arno Urban. In 1910 the hotel was acquired by the Jewish beer merchant Leopold Steiniger who changed its name after World War I to hotel Continental. The business then passed onto his only daughter Olga and she immediately started its modernization. In 1931, architect Karel Mattusch from Cheb cleared the facade of the historicizing elements at her request and gave it a modern character. The famous shoe manufacturing firm Polický-Popper A. G. Chrudim adapted spaces on the ground floor of the hotel for their company shop in1933 and 1935 and they made sizeable openings in the front for the display windows. The hotel was confiscated as Jewish property and “aryanizated” in 1940. A hotel, this time called Slavie, has been operating there since World War II until today.
