Despite having been extended by a neighbouring burgher house on the south side in the mid 14th century, the old Gothic town hall eventually became too small and not stately enough for the growing town administration. Thus, a new town hall was designed in 1721 and 1722 by Veronese architect Giovanni Battista Alliprandi who was also the author of the fortification system in Prague. The right wing of the new town hall was built between the years 1723 and 1728 on the site of two houses of the Zedwitz family purchased by the Town Hall. The construction was managed by two local fortification builders, Angelus Pfeffer and Johann Christoph Faber. Unfortunately, the construction project could not be completed due to insufficient funds and the building of the old town hall remained in use. The Gothic tower of the old town hall protruding into the square was torn down in 1805 and the town administration ultimately moved to the Municipal House in the lower part of the square in 1850.
