Johann Theodor Meier’s House
Accessible to the public only during operating hours of the businesses residing here.
House No. 144 was built by photographer Johann Theodor Meier from Cheb in 1872.
Haberzettl designed a building on a slightly elongated rectangular shape, with the entrance formed by a column porticus reaching into the street line. The two-floor house with an Empire feel was located in the centre of the construction site. Its width corresponded roughly to today’s building without the side avant-corps. A building situated to the yard where a photo studio was located was constructed along with the new block of flats. In 1883 the house was acquired by Ernst Adam Witz, a print works owner. The building was extended around 1891[1] into today’s form. The house was designed with the side avant-corps covered by boss on the floor levels, the ground floor was emphasized by band rustication. In 1890 the house was purchased by Wilhelm Buchsbaum operating a hardware store in Cheb, as well as a grain and fertilizers store. Small shops were located on the ground floor. Chemist Friedrich Heller ran his shop here in 1908, and the firm Abeles & Schnabel dealing in cotton had its office there as well. Johann Wenk operated his printing works in the industrial buildings in the back. In 1913 Buchsbaum decided to modernize the ground floor and place huge glassed display windows in decorative cast iron frames there. The project was not carried out in the end, neither the raising of the building by one floor planned in 1925. After the war national administration was applied to the house. Its reconstruction was started in 1948 since the house was damaged during the war by air bombs. The building acquired its today’s smooth facade only after 1948
