Salomon Sichel’s House

The Jewish merchant Salomon Sichel had the house No. 586 built in today’s Svobody Street in 1891. The project of an indistinctive building was developed for Sichel by builder Johann Siegl. A few years later, in the spring of 1900, Sichel died of pneumonia so his wife Philippine (born Rindskopf) inherited the house. She sold it to the southern fruits, wines and delicatessen trader Johann Kresse in 1907. Shortly afterwards, the house was purchased by Max and August Löbl, manufacturers of shirts and underclothing and they established a linen goods shop here in 1922. The drugstore of Franz Lang “Zum Schutzengel” (At the guardian angel) resided in the house in the 1920s, and the dye-works of Anton Grundmann were located in the yard. Lawyers JUDr. Paul Freundlich, JUDr. Friedrich Zuckermann and JUDr. Moritz Zuckermann lived in the house. In 1936 the house was obtained by Margaretha Frank from Klesť and Marie Frank from Nová Ves who had the shops and main entrance portals modernized. In the 1960s there was a milk restaurant, later a “Sazka” betting company shop and a store of the “Foto-Kino” company. The house fell into such disrepair though that it gradually became uninhabitable so a general reconstruction took place in 1968–1969.
