Orphanages

Not accessible to the public
First records of childcare date back to 1394 and 1595 when a “hospital for children” is mentioned. In 1712, an orphanage for 6 boys and 6 girls was opened in Lodní Street to fulfil a promise given in case the town would be protected from the plague. Another orphanage was also in operation for some time in a house by Mlýnská brána (Mill Gate), which had once been the home of the Cheb headsman, Karl Huss. A modern orphanage was opened in 1904 opposite the army barracks by the road to Aš (house No. 54). Today (i.e. 2023) the house is the seat of the Cheb Homeowners Association.
